Taasäsaft

Re-fresh, rhythmic drip, one sip.

In a process-oriented work, Rahel Kraft and Tomoko Hojo will explore the history of Gais as a whey spa during the Klang Moor Schopfe festival in Gais, Switzerland. The former spa buildings on the village square are still a reminder of this. What stories are there about healing? How is the theme of curing represented today? Hojo and Kraft will work with narratives relating to the “waste product” whey, the containers used to transport it, the hidden labour that went into the treatments, down to the goat that had to provide the milk or the dairy farmer who had to transport the whey for miles.

About

Tomoko Hojo (JP) and Rahel Kraft (CH) perform, install and exhibit sonic works. Besides their solo work, they have been active as a collective since 2016, conducting projects and residencies in Japan and Europe, keeping a steady collaboration via remote communication. Their work has been published by LINE Sound Arts Editions LA in 2020 and 2021, Deutschlandfunk Kultur 2021 and was part of Audiosphere at Museo National Centro de Arte Madrid 2020. They created three geo-localised audio walks, utilising an app as an interface to interact between sound, the environment and walking at ZKM Karlsruhe, Art Center Nairs and Nakanojo Biennale. Their compositions are included in radio programs and play lists word wide. In September 2022 Hojo and Kraft are invited to create a solo exhibition at Komaki City Library.

Our Collaboration

We are interested in the hidden, faint and intimate sounds that are often inaudible in the relationship between people and place. We rethink not only the individual relationship between people and the soundscape, but also the mode of presentation, aiming for a playful and intimate experience. Auditory memories, performative field recordings, listening to snow, rivers and silence, and hours of translating interviews from Japanese to English or German to English and back again form an important backdrop of shared experience. We like to use language as a textural sonic element, focusing not on meaning as such, but on timbre, melody and the beauty of not understanding a language. A starting point for our work is often the location/sonic specificity of a place, getting vibrant inspirations and collecting textural sonic richness through various interventions.

Releases

The loveliness of the work rests in the way they allow these fragments to seemingly evolve organically. With clear nods to Luc Ferrari’s work and his adoration of his surroundings, there is a strong sense of place here. By allowing a meditative spirit to take shape there is a journey of sorts, one punctuated by the occasional sounds of truly being alive.

– Beachsloth, October 21

The album meanders like a horse in a field, content to enjoy the day, to graze on whatever is available, to drink in the sun and the day’s gentle breeze.  But shouldn’t the horse be working?
